About DOAP
What is DOAP?
DOAP® is a patented, 100% silicone dough scrubber that removes sticky dough from hands, bowls, dough bins and starter jars using only water.
Why is it called DOAP?
It's called DOAP because DOUGH + SOAP = DOAP. You hold it like a bar of soap, but it's made especially for dough.
People usually laugh at the name & you're sure to get a reaction when someone overhears how much you love DOAP - and that all your friends are using it now.
Who invented DOAP?
Joshua Grange, a Nashville sourdough baker and longtime touring musician, invented DOAP after ruining one too many sponges during a particularly painful dough-day.
Is DOAP patented?
Yes. DOAP’s design is protected by U.S. Design Patent No. D1124387, and a U.S. utility patent and a Canadian patent are pending.
DOAP® is a registered trademark in the U.S. (Reg. No. 8,255,221), the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada. See our patent page for details.
What is DOAP made of?
100% food-grade silicone that is BPA free and meets FDA food-contact requirements. No fillers, no coatings.
Where is DOAP made?
DOAP is located in Nashville TN, where the original DOAP bar was invented and designed. Today DOAP is produced to our original patented design specs by a specialist food-grade silicone manufacturer overseas, so we can get them into more bakers hands.
Using DOAP
How do I use DOAP?
Fill a bowl or container with water, wet your hands, and rub DOAP between them while they're submerged. The silicone nubs lift the dough off quickly. Rinse off and you're done. Running water works too, but the bowl/container method saves water.
Does DOAP work on sourdough?
Yes. DOAP was invented by a sourdough baker especially for sticky, stubborn high-hydration doughs, which are especially tricky to wash off.
Does it work on pizza, pasta, cookie, rye or gluten-free dough?
Yes! DOAP works for pizza, pasta, bread & cookie doughs, ryes, pies, cakes and gluten free doughs too.
Do I need soap?
Nope! DOAP removes dough with water alone. Wash your hands with soap afterward if you like.
Should I use hot or cold water?
Using lukewarm to warm water is best for your hands. Hot water is not necessary for dough removal, and can even lead to gummier dough.
Does DOAP work on dried dough?
DOAP is made for fresh, sticky dough. If dough has dried onto a bowl or jar, soak it in water until the dough softens first.
What else can I clean with DOAP?
DOAP also works on mixing bowls, dough bins, proofing containers, starter jars, stand mixer bowls, mixing attachments including spiral arms.
DOAP is great at cleaning flour residue out of wicker banneton proofing baskets.
You can use your DOAP to scrub pots, pans, dishes and skillets, and it works great as a vegetable scrubber too!
Use DOAP anywhere a sponge would get ruined.
Where should the dough water go?
We recommend using a container as a "second sink" when baking, where you can wash your hands and let tools and bowls soak, softening and breaking dough apart. Empty the container in compost or garden, or use a simple sink strainer.
How is DOAP different from a bench scraper?
A bench scraper is a tool that moves, divides, and shapes dough and scrapes it off your counter. DOAP cleans the sticky residue that's left on your hands, bowls and jars. Most bakers use both.
Care
Do I need to wash DOAP before I use it?
Yes. Wash it once with soap and water before its first use.
How do I clean my DOAP?
Put it in the dishwasher, or soak it in water for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse. Always let your DOAP dry between uses.
How long does DOAP last?
With normal use, DOAP lasts for years.
Ordering & shipping
Should I get the Classic or the Mini?
The Classic suits adult hands and normal jobs. The Mini is sized for smaller hands, starter jars and tight spots. The Classic + Mini Bundle saves 15% and ships by early December.
How much is shipping?
US orders ship for a flat $5, and orders of $59 or more ship free.
When will my order ship?
Classic orders ship within 2 weeks while we restock. Mini and Mini-Bundle preorders ship by early December, when the Minis arrive. For Xmas delivery, place orders by December 10.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship to a wide number of countries. International orders need a phone number for customs. In the UK, you can also buy DOAP from Sous Chef.
